The whispers of 2016 have become the facts of 2017, concerning large retailers closing down store locations. Some of the closings even include the retail malls themselves. So once again the retail world is seeing a drastic change in how they operate.
Now I know the American economy has struggled these past years. People found themselves having to choose food and paying the mortgage, over retail pleasure shopping. So if those jeans still fit you from a year ago, you were going to be wearing them again. No running to the mall for the latest fashionable clothes, or meeting your friends to grab a bite to eat or luxury coffee to drink.
No, the McDonald’s $1 menu, resale boutiques, and online shopping is where you found yourself!
But I don’t think the economy is the only cause for this change in the retail industry. I believe technology has something to do with it too. Why go to the mall or cafe, when you can save gas and order from home. Only to have it delivered directly to your door.
Shopping online is timely, safe, and convenient. Also, I have noticed that online stores practically dance on their heads to get your business with free shipping and reduced pricing! Why venture out and have to wait, or be a victim of someone else’s mental breakdown? Online shopping is a very practical solution for today’s generations.
And, as for the socialization aspect…You can connect by tweeting, messaging, Face time, Facebook live, Pinterest and Instagram. If you want to know the latest gossip just read your friend’s social media pages. Connecting without actually touching is as easy as it gets for socialization in this age of technology!
I believe we will see more of the retail giants downsizing their locations and enhancing their online presence. They won’t entirely disappear, but the landscape of the retail industry is changing.
